A bit of history

The Oneida Indian Nation is a Native American Indian nation whose sacred and sovereign home is located in New York City. The Oneida tribe was a key ally of the United States during the Revolutionary War and a cultural and economic anchor for the region.

According to Wikipedia, before the advent of Europeans, the Onida homeland consisted of over 24,000 km², stretching from the St. Lawrence River in the north to the Susquehanna River.

In 1794, after the defeat of the British Empire, George Washington signed the Treaty of Canandaigua, recognizing the Oneida as a sovereign entity. A reservation of 1,214 km² (1.1 million ha) was established for the Oneida. During the Indian Migration in the 1830s, most of the tribe was forced to sell their lands and move to Wisconsin (there is also a reservation there now).

By the early 1900s, illegal treaties had almost completely deprived the Oneida of land. The tribe had to go to court to get back the last 32 acres (13 ha) given to them. In 1919, the federal government filed a lawsuit in the US District Court to help the tribe reclaim the land. The court ruled in favor of the tribe. The tribe now owns 17,675 non-contiguous acres (7,153 ha) of land.

The Oneida Indian Nation currently has about 1,000 registered members, about half of whom still live on the reservation.

What to visit on the reservation

The nation owns and operates a number of businesses, including the Turning Stone Resort Casino, the newly opened Yellow Brick Road Casino, a chain of gas stations and stores, a full-service marina, and a game reserve.

So, upon arrival, you will find:

  • 700 hotel rooms – more than 4.5 million guests per year;
  • 5 golf courses – many PGA Championship tournaments;
  • 11 restaurants – 3 received the AAA 4 Diamond Awards;
  • 2 SPA salons;
  • golf club and sports complex;
  • van fleet;
  • the casinos mentioned above;
  • 13 gas stations and SavOn stores;
  • 3 marinas;
  • a 3,000-acre (1,214 ha) hunting reserve.

With diversified businesses successfully built over the past decades, the Oneida Indian Nation has become one of the largest employers in the state. In addition, the tribe entered into agreements with neighboring governments that forever strengthened the sovereignty of the nation.

Today, the nation is focused on reinvesting its income into initiatives to help ensure a prosperous and sustainable future for its current members and future generations. The government is committed to ensuring that people reach their highest potential in education, have access to quality health care, and secure their economic future. It is engaged in providing legal, administrative, and educational services to help protect its people’s sovereignty, homeland, culture, and employment opportunities.

If you are interested in visiting, be sure to plan ahead. Finding a reservation is not easy. You will need to fly to Albany or Syracuse and then rent a car or take a taxi to the place.

Where to stay when visiting the Oneida people will depend on your budget and what amenities are important to you. Both cities have many hotels that offer easy access from the airport as well as close proximity to other attractions such as museums and art galleries.
