The New York City Parks and Recreation Department shared a video on Twitter of ranger Michael Witten releasing a flying squirrel back into the wild.
“She just jumped and flew, almost touched her face, realized it wasn’t a tree, and jumped off,” he said.

This species of squirrels are common representatives of the city’s wildlife.
“The flying squirrel is a very small graceful creature. It only weighs about 5 ounces (140 g),” the ranger explained.

Northern and southern flying squirrels are found in New York. They live in parks feeding on acorns and mushrooms, although they are difficult to spot.
“They go out mostly at night, they have developed eyes, which helps them see better at night,” Witten said.
But if you manage to see her, you won’t be disappointed.
“They are very cute and really nice to look at because they can fly between trees,” he remarked.
For Ranger Mike, a Georgia native, seeing a squirrel they named Rocky made New York feel a little more like home.
“Until I saw Rocky here, I had no idea that these squirrels live with us. It’s great to know that the variety of animals in New York is not limited to those we see during the day, ”admitted the ranger.
