This Sunday, July 23rd is the 10th (and final) New York Bodypainting Day. The event will take place at the North Plaza (Union Square Park) from 12:00 to 16:00.
Ten years ago, when artist Andy Golub started painting on nudes, his public performances shocked viewers and even led to several arrests (all cases eventually closed). But other artists appreciated the idea and expressed a desire to join. Golub then founded NYC Bodypainting Day, a celebration of art and humanism.
Events have moved around the city several times – from Columbus Circle to Washington Square, Times Square, and now Union Square Park. Even the COVID-19 pandemic could not stop the event – the models were completely naked, but wearing masks.
“Since I started doing body art, New York has become more naked than before,” says Golub. “When I first started painting on bodies, people were constantly in shock, and over time they began to take it more calmly.”

How to Attend Body Art Day in New York
This weekend, participants will march through the streets of Greenwich Village, take part in a photo shoot in Washington Square Park, ride a double-decker bus across the Manhattan Bridge, and end the day with a raucous party in Bushwick. Everyone is invited to a party at Heavy Woods.
If you would like to join NYC Bodypainting Day as a model, artist, or volunteer, please apply (all participants must be over 18).
How it all goes
Every year, dozens of models and artists of all shapes, sizes, genders, nationalities, ages 20 to 80 come together. The models, completely naked, are covered in paint from head to toe (technically, this is theatrical make-up). Their bodies are decorated with various patterns and ornaments.
More than 50 models and 40 artists are expected to take part in the grand event this weekend. It is important for Golub to expand the range of body types, and not just use the bodies that can be seen on the catwalks.
“As for me, I consider myself a humanist. I think it goes back to the idea of believing that all people are good. If all people are good, then you don’t have to worry that you look different from anyone else. Just be yourself,” says Golub.
He also welcomes a variety of artistic interpretations. This year’s theme is The Voice of the Artist, encouraging artists to paint what inspires them.
