The Central Park Conservancy has completed extensive renovation work. The Chess and Checkers House (Mid-Park at 64th) received new tables, a roof and floors, thanks to a multi-million dollar renovation begun last summer with support from the Thompson Family Foundation.
The restoration focused on updating the building and its surrounding landscape to provide accessibility for the park’s modern users while maintaining the spirit of the site’s original purpose and design.
“The Central Park Conservancy has paid special attention to preserving the historic character of this site, which dates back to 1866. As a result of the restoration, a rustic pergola was recreated, made of durable black acacia wood, which is not subject to decay. Work was also carried out to modernize the building, including the installation of new tables, ramps and public toilets,” the representatives of the organization noted.
After 11 months of restoration, designers, architects and historians gathered on Wednesday, June 28 to celebrate the restoration of this wonderful place in Central Park. There are now 24 chess and checkers tables available, open to players of all ages.
