New Yorkers’ new entertainment takes TikTok by storm
New Yorkers prove that even a problem can be turned into entertainment. People filmed a large rodent running around near Washington Square Park, which quickly captivated people in the park and online viewers. A viral video showing dancing with a rat has garnered over 1.5 million views on TikTok.
“This is the most New York situation possible,” reads the caption for the video posted by user @Synthefire.
It all starts with a scene typical of New York: a large rat running through a park where people are relaxing.
The performers at the DJ console decided to greet the intruder by chanting “Ratatouille,” a nod to a 2007 Pixar cartoon about a gourmet rat who became a chef. People joyfully applaud the rat and at one point a person from the group came out to the animal and began to dance in front of him.
Then, apparently rejoicing at the recognition, the rodent headed straight for his cheering fans.

From January to mid-June 2023, rat complaints in New York City were down 26% from the same period last year, according to City Hall and Department of Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch. The authorities attribute this to the new rules for taking out the garbage.
