A Manhattan firefighter allegedly stole American Express and Mastercard bank cards from a man who died while being treated by emergency services. The next day, the kidnapper went to buy AirPods for himself at the Target store, writes the New York Post.
Silas McKenzie, a 33-year-old Bronx resident, has been with the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) for four years. He allegedly committed this disgusting act while leaving for an emergency medical call. Bronx District Attorney Darsel Clark said the incident happened on January 11, 2021 in Manhattan, but he only became aware of it now.
According to the prosecutor, the rescuers who came to the call recognized the man in the Turtle Bay apartment as dead. While other rescuers were busy sealing the house, McKenzie took the deceased’s credit cards and left the scene.
The following morning, between 9 and 11 a.m., the suspect visited a Sunoco gas station, Food Bazaar, and a Target store, spending a total of $1,123 from the stolen credit cards.
In early June, McKenzie appeared in court on a range of charges, including grand larceny, attempted identity theft, criminal imposture and abuse of office.

“These actions are despicable, all the more so because he is a member of the city’s heroes and has betrayed the trust of the public,” Clarke said.
The next court hearing in the McKenzie case is scheduled for September 7th.
