Gone are the days when you stood idle for hours at a bus stop waiting for a train or bus to take your desired route. There will still be delays in NYC traffic, but at least you’ll be ready for it now. The New York City Transportation Authority (MTA) launched a new service that provides passengers with timely information about changes in the schedule of metro trains and city buses.
On July 10, the MTA launched a new MTA Service Alerts service. By subscribing to it, you will receive real-time updates on city bus and metro schedules directly to your phone. You can subscribe to MTA Service Alerts here.
The service was created in order to provide timely information about any changes in public transport schedules, as well as about delays and cancellations of flights. You can customize MTA Service Alerts to your liking by selecting specific days, times and lines that you want to be notified about. You can also choose how you want to receive notifications – via email or text messages.
Email notifications will follow the same format as messages on the AIT website. Text notifications will be sent from 511-682, which is reserved specifically for the MTA.

“New Yorkers are always on the move, and with MTA Service Alerts, MTA customers can travel with confidence with the most up-to-date information. The new approach to service status notifications will ensure that clients are easily and consistently informed of any changes, and will be able to receive timely notifications of scheduled work,” said Shanifa Riara, Interim Director of Client Relations, MTA.
Notifications about the operation of elevators and escalators at stations, as well as notifications about closures and traffic jams on bridges and in MTA tunnels are available in another service – the MyMTAAlerts system.
