Another cover flew into the air in a park near the site of the first explosion.
Ana Duran says firefighters evacuated everyone in the area. She was about to get into her car when a friend, seeing dark smoke, told her to move away from the car.
“She told me, ‘Ana, Ana, don’t get in the car. I asked: “Why?” She replied: “There is a lot of smoke.” Then, when I turned away, the sunroof exploded under my car,” Duran said.
Duran was not injured, but residents of the area had to leave the house for several hours due to high levels of carbon monoxide.
“My head began to spin in the house. And when they arrived, they measured the level of carbon monoxide in the basement. He was quite tall,” said Mark Bonnett.
It is not clear what caused the manhole covers to explode. Many believe that things could have been much worse and there could have been more victims.
“If it wasn’t for my girlfriend, I would have died in my car,” Duran said.
