Bassam Khatib saved up money for ten years to open a gourmet shop in Staten Island. Just 9 months after his dream came true, a man was killed while robbing his establishment, according to the New York Daily News.
Bassam Khatib, 35, worked at his Manor Deli & Convenience store on July 8. Shortly before 8 pm, two armed robbers entered and shot him in the chest. Medics rushed Khatib to the hospital, but failed to save him. The swindlers fled empty-handed.
On July 10, the NYPD released surveillance footage clearly showing two suspects wearing black balaclavas. The criminals first targeted a nearby establishment, but it was closed there. They then approached Bassam Khatib’s shop.
The video shows that after the failed robbery and murder of Khatib, the criminals run in a panic back to their maroon Cherokee jeep. Police said they were last seen speeding toward New Jersey on the Staten Island Expressway.
“He came to this country to work! He worked two shifts. He worked, worked, worked – all the time, – said a former colleague and neighbor of the murdered man, Abdulrahman Kaid. We need justice for him. Justice”.
Khatib immigrated to the US from Pakistan in 2013 and soon after began working at his brother’s deli, Richmond Terrace. According to Qaid, his brother decided to move to Jordan and sold the store about a year ago, prompting Khatib to go on his own.

Kaid said that the murder of a friend emotionally devastated him, because he was “like family” to him.

Khatib’s wife said that he was a faithful husband, breadwinner and companion, and a good father to his two children.
