Three children are in critical condition following a house fire in Brownsville. According to ABC7NY, the children were at home alone.

Three children were taken to the hospital in critical condition after the fire in an apartment in Brooklyn. The flames broke out around 11:30 am Sunday, August 20, on the 11th floor of the 14-story Van Dyke Houses at 383 Livonia Ave in Brownsville.

Firefighters reached the 11th floor 12 minutes after the alarm sounded, immediately removed four, five and eight-year-old children from the building and immediately began to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The children were then taken to the hospital, where they are in a critical but stable condition.

According to officials, the children were left at home alone, one of the parents was taken into custody. Mayor Eric Adams was at the scene of the fire on Sunday.

“It was terrible. It was the most terrible thing I have ever seen in my life. I saw how firefighters pulled one child after another, how they lay on the ground. I have never seen anything like it,” says neighbor Audrey Ray.

Neighbors say the mother frantically searched for her children – authorities say she was at work at the time. Anthony Halliburton, 37, was arrested and charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of children. Police believe he is the father of two of the children.
