In the near future, drones will become an integral part of the life of New Yorkers. They will make sure that the infrastructure is working, that the beaches are safe (which they have been doing for a long time), and even that you are complying with the city’s requirements for home maintenance. On July 21, Mayor Eric Adams announced new rules for the use of drones in New York.
The new rules will allow drones to perform certain municipal tasks in the city. In particular, they will help inspecting the facades of buildings in New York; maintain bridges and tunnels, as well as monitor the condition and safety of beaches.
“New York is flying into the future with drones that will make city agencies faster and safer and save taxpayers money,” Adams said. Drones are already saving lives, as was the case, for example, with the tragic collapse of a parking lot in Lower Manhattan. But we have yet to unlock their true potential.”
Drones provide an advantage and can perform tasks that humans would not be able to do on their own, city officials say.
“They provide 360-degree visibility, they can go where people can’t go – drones will greatly improve the efficiency and quality of our inspections of critical infrastructure and, ultimately, the safety of New York,” said Deputy Mayor Mir Joshi.

“From patrolling a 2,000-square-mile watershed in the upstate to routine inspections of infrastructure along the coastline in five boroughs, drones operated by our trained staff will help us serve New Yorkers more safely and efficiently,” said Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwala.
Currently, drones in New York are used by emergency services: NYPD and FDNY. Most recently, drones “assessed indoor conditions and searched for survivors without putting the lives of firefighters at risk” when a parking lot collapsed in Lower Manhattan.
If you want to use a drone to perform some tasks, then individuals and legal entities, according to the new rules, must obtain permission from the NYPD to take off and land an unmanned aerial vehicle in any part of the city. The police must also be notified immediately of any incident while taking off, flying or landing a drone.
