Director Dee Rees's celebrated debut film Pariah (2011, 86 min) follows teenager Alike (Adepero Oduye) who lives in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood with her parents (Charles Parnell, Kim Wayans) and younger sister (Sahra Mellesse). A butch lesbian, Alike quietly embraces her identity, but she wonders how much she can truly confide in her family, especially with her parents' marriage already strained.

This screening is the 2010's installment of our year-long series New York on Film: Decade by Decade, programmed by Jessica Green. The series accompanies the Museum's centennial exhibition, This Is New York: 100 Years of the City in Art and Pop Culture.
